The Gospel

The Bible confirms what our human experience tells us, that mankind is alientated from God.

The problem is sin.

We sin by nature and by choice. Romans 3:23, "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God." Isaiah 59:2a, "For your iniquities have separated you from your God..." Romans 6:23a, "The wages of sin is death..."

Sin is universal among mankind; it separates us from God; and it results in death, eternal death.

But don't despair - there is Good News! Romans 6:23b, "...but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."

Sin has it's wages. But God has a gift for us! Wages are something that we earn, and because of our sin, we have earned eternal separation from God. A gift is something that you cannot earn. It is given freely; if it is earned, it is no longer a gift.

This gift is salvation, forgiveness of sins. The sins that separate us from God can be forgiven!

How - Does God just wink and forget? No! God is perfectly pure and God is perfectly just and right. God in His justice has dealt with our sin; He sent His only Son, Jesus Christ, to carry our sins, to bear the punishment of our sins, when He died on the Cross.

1 Peter 2:24, He Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness... 2 Corinthians 5:21, "For He made Him Who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him."

This is the great exchange! God takes away and removes our sin, and replaces it with righteousness, with purity and goodness. Jesus takes our sin, and we are given His perfection!

How can I receive this gift? It is received by faith. Acts 16:31, "Beleive on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved..." Romans 10:13, "For whoever calls on the Name of the Lord shall be saved."

Saving faith is not some weak "Yeah, I guess so" kind of thing. Saving faith includes total reliance upon Christ. The saved person is no longer relying upon himself, his "good works," his religion, or anything else. He is relying only and completely upon Jesus Christ.

Saving faith also includes repentance, turning from sin. God doesn't forgive our sins so that we can go on in them, so that we can do some more! The Apostle Paul taught the people "that they should repent, turn to God, and do works befitting repentance."

This does not mean that once a person is saved he will never sin again.
What it does mean is that God gives us the desire and the power to not sin, and that we should not habitually sin.

What if we do sin? 1 John 2:1, "My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the Righteous."
